Rex Navarette: Seriously Joking

I finally got the chance to watch a live comedy show of Rex Navarette last night at SM Megalmall Cinema 10. The show openned with Mike Unzon who was most applauded in his piece on how (un)used answering machines are in the Philippines. When Rex came out, I prepared myself for more than an hour of laughter and giggle which he did not fail to deliver.

Here is an image taken at the entrance of the theater:

I have seen some of his skits on his show in MTV “Rex in the City” but he still made me laugh because there were some additional twist and turns to familiar lines, or rather punchlines, which made it more interesting and exciting. His trademark of making jokes about his native country and countrymen are never offending, instead they serve as eye openners for those who have more virtue for understanding and acceptance.

New characters to his comedy are:

  • Manny “Pak-yow” which he made it sound like “F— Y–“ which, according to Rex, made Manny a champion because since two-years old, Manny have always been into fistfights because of his last name;
  • His besfriend of Irish origin, Brian O’Brien whom he gave ‘lengua’ as a present which is a good Filipino food because “when you taste it, it’ill taste you back!”;
  • The ‘President’ of the “Republic” which made him drop to the floor, on his belly, when they met and he asked the President how “Papa Smurf” was!; and
  • His ‘Tita’ in Batangas for his finale, who did not want him to go out when he would visit her from the US as a child because there are dwarft’s in the bushes who would take his “birdie”; not even in the tree because there is a “kapre” who smokes what actually looks like cigar, but in fact, his “birdie” ; and not even on top of the roof because there is a “manananggal” who sticks out her tongue that penetrates the uterus!

Rex after the show:

Those are just some of the humors in his show last night and I could have stated more but I may run out of pages. I still have vivid recollection of what they were because Rex was just too clear to have penetrated my lazy memory! If I will have the chance to see him again, I would because seeing him on MTV regularly, I realized last night that he has always new something for his audience.

The show was truly a “serious joke” but Rex was definitely not!

Postscript: Try these flash movie links. They are hilarious: (SBC Packers: Just wait for the movie to play); (Maritess vs. The Superfriends; you have the choice to watch it on ‘low’ quality PC and ‘high’ quality PC)
