Here are some interesting facts about FEU Tamaraws and Ateneo Blue Eagles basketball history against each other in the UAAP. They don’t have much having met only twice in the semis and once in the finals [this is only the second time] since introduction of the Final-4 in 1994. [Results per game see below]
It was only in 2000 when the two teams met in the semis when FEU made history in the UAAP by being only the third team in the league to beat a higher-seeded team [Ateneo], 61-60 and 75-67, only to be swept by La Salle in the finals.
In 2001, FEU and Ateneo, met again, same seeding, but this time Ateneo made sure the 2000-semis will not happen again and went on to the finals by beating FEU 67-63 but lost to La Salle in the finals. In 2003, the two teams met again, this time in the finals, when FEU swept Ateneo in the best-of-three finals. [Source]
For the coaches of both teams, this they have to say: For Coach Glen Capacio of FEU, “The positive thing on our side is we’re hungrier and we can deliver against all odds…With God, anything is possible as long as we work hard and do our best.” For Coach Norman Black, “We want to continue winning and our motivation is now to get a three-peat. We feel as hungry as they are,” [Source]
As for a fearless forecast of Game-1 tomorrow, to be seen live for the first time over ABS-CBN Channel 2, an Ateneo alumnus and sports analysts says: “It’s gonna be pretty, pretty difficult to predict and to call which team is gonna pull through in the end…I think FEU is gonna get Game No. 1.”[Source]
Another would rather say this: Yes, the three-peat will happen. Despite RR’s brilliance. Despite FEU’s star power. Despite their hunger. Because at the end of the day, the better team always wins. And make no mistake about it, Ateneo is the better team. Their defense rotates better and the ball swings a lot faster. And that will be enough to push the Blue Eagles to the top. Again. [Source]
